Wow, what a week. All Energy was a massive couple of days, but our highlight was obviously hosting a trivia event in a basement (“cellar bar”) for a big, nerdy and rowdy crowd. We’re still buzzing!
Thank you so much to everyone that came along! Your energy, enthusiasm and tolerance for our ridiculous questions truly made the evening. It was awesome to look out into a sea of faces who get our sense of humour.
For those that missed out, we’re sorry — we can’t wait to do it again soon and we’ll look for bigger venues (including venues outside of Melbourne).
Despite the winning team consisting of some of the most knowledgeable NEM nerds who’ve been around since the literal start of the NEM, the final results were still very tight — just 6 points separated the top 5, with a single point between first and second!
The winners took away exclusive and limited edition Currently Speaking coffee mugs, which we hope to see appearing across AEMO Working Groups in the near future ;)
What kind of nerdy questions did we subject our audience to?
Match the AER financial penalty to the participant
(You can potentially cut off life support to customers, but don’t get your PASA bids wrong!)
Chronologically ordering NEM catastrophes of the last decade
(The 6 month Basslink outage was prior to the SA system black)
And my absolute favourite — “what is the peak power output of a horse… in horsepower”
(It’s ~15 horsepower)
But most importantly, we were also able to do a little bit of good off the back of the event. We’ve made a donation of $690 to the First Nations Clean Energy Network. That’s equivalent to a little under 500 Watts worth of rooftop solar panels… or 0.67 horsepower if solar panels were measured like horses (averaged daily power!).
We’re going to take a long nap, and then we’ll be back with regular content shortly.
Your coffee mugs are in good use, thanks guys!

Looks like it would have been a cracker of an evening gents. Safe to say had I been able to attend I wouldn't have been able to answer any of your questions. But I'm sure I would still have had an awesome time. Keep up the great work! Cheers Nick
